NIA, India visits Canada for a joint exercise with RCMP

18th November 2021 – In a tweet, the Indian Consulate in Ottawa confirmed that a high-level team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) was in Canada for two days, 4th and 5th November 2021 at the invitation of RCMP. Both teams met to collaborate on investigating terrorism.

The press release which was issued by the Indian Consulate stated that the two police agencies met to coordinate investigation against entities and individuals suspected of terrorism and to discuss other criminal matters. The NIA team was led by an Inspector General of Police which held detailed discussions on gathering and collating evidences against institutions and agencies who are suspected in multiple ongoing investigations in the cases of terrorism and other serious crimes.

The NIA team held additional meetings with International Crime and Counter-Terrorism Bureau of Global Affairs Canada on counter-terrorism and interdiction of global terrorist financing. The Indian delegation has invited their Canadian counterparts to visit India in order to continue to build co-operation and collaboration on issues impacting both India and Canada.

India and Canada have signed a treaty on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters in 1994 and have an Extradition Treaty since 1987.
