Alberta celebrates Hindu Heritage Month this August

3rd August 2021 – In a joint statement issued on 1st August 2021 by Alberta’s Honorable Minister of Culture, Ron Orr and Honorable Associate Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism, Muhammad Yaseen, it was announced that the month of August would be celebrated as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’ in the province of Alberta moving forward.

It is a welcome step by the Alberta government which recognizes the contributions of the Hindu community in the province. The special feature of the joint statement was the contribution of Hindu temples and many charity organizations and food banks who supported the local community in the critical times of COVID-19.

Hindu Heritage Month is an apt opportunity for the non-Hindus to learn about Hinduism, common practices and tradition. More importantly, it helps Hindus to keep their children linked and educated to the rich Hindu culture. In 2020, Sanatan Sanskruti Manch and Bhartiya Multicultural Heritage Society of Alberta started an online petition to get August as recognized as the Hindu Heritage Month which was supported was over 1,300 people.

Ontario adopted the resolution to declare November as the Hindu Heritage Month in 2016.
