Toronto man charged for killing Indian student and one other homicide

12th April 2022 – In a news conference conducted today morning, Toronto Police Service announced that they have arrested one man in the case of double homicides committed in the Toronto area last week.

Chief James Ramer confirmed that the Police has arrested a 39-year-old Richard Jonathan Edwin for the killings of Kartik Vasudev, a 21-year-old Indian student and Elijah Eleazar Mahepath, 35-year-old.

On 7th April 2022, at about 5 P.M., Kartik was shot multiple times outside the Glen Road entrance at the Sherbourne Subway station in Toronto. He succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead in the hospital. Kartik was a global management student and had landed in Toronto in January of this year. He was a resident of Ghaziabad, a city that borders New Delhi, India.

It is alleged that the accused discharged a handgun striking the victim several times before fleeing the crime scene.

In another crime, it is alleged that on 9th April 2022, at about 7 P.M., the accused approached the second victim, 35-year-old Elijah Eleazar Mahepath who was walking near Dundas Street East and George Street and shot him multiple times with his shotgun. He fled the crime scene again.

Police confirmed that these murders are believed to be random attacks and no relation between the accused and the victims could be established. The motive behind the killings has not yet been identified and it remains under investigation.

Police arrested Edwin on the evening of 10th April 2022 and he appeared at College Park Courts on Monday, 11th April 2022. He has been charged with:
