University of Guelph to give honorary degrees to two Bharatiyas including author of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’
9th June 2022 – Vikas Swarup, acclaimed author of ‘Q&A’ and former High Commissioner of India (HCI) to Canada and Dr. Bina Agarwal, who is a leading voice in fighting for women’s land rights in India, are set to receive an honorary degree from the University of Guelph (Uof G) on June 16.
Vikas Swarup, who served as the HCI from 2017 to 2019, is being recognized for his contributions in the field of arts and services in strengthening Canada-India relations.
Swarup’s first book ‘Q&A’ was later adapted into an Oscar winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. His first novel won many international awards and was short-listed for the Best First Book by Commonwealth Writer’s Prize. The book was later translated and published in over 40 languages.
Born in Prayagraj, India, Swarup graduated from Allahabad University with majors in history, philosophy and psychology. He supports initiatives such as U of G’s Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) and is connected to Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute.
Dr. Bina Agarwal is a leading feminist economist who has dedicated her career to women’s land rights in India.
Her work on gender and land rights as well as the centrality of women’s independent land and property ownership to their well-being has influenced policy of international organizations such as the World Bank and was reflected in the landmark amended Hindu Succession Act (1956) in 2005 that ensures, for the first time, equal rights for daughters to ancestral property in India.
