HTC writes to London School Board for survey that states Hindustanis as East Indians

21st July 2021 – It has come to the notice of Hindu Times Canada that Thames Valley District School Board is conducting a survey ‘Every Student Belongs’ which helps to collect demographic data of its students. HTC has found couple of discrepancies in the questionnaire and is objecting to those https://www.tvdsb.ca/en/our-board/every-student-belongs.aspx

Questions 11 and 12 are asking participants to select their ethnic or cultural origins. However, there is no option of selecting ‘Indian’. Instead, it mentions ‘East Indian’. In a letter sent to the London based board authorities, HTC has proposed to change ‘East Indian’ to either ‘Indian’ or ‘Hindustani’. Not only using ‘East Indian’ is factually wrong, it also brings disgrace and painful memories from the harsh colonial past to the vibrant and peaceful Hindustani community.

  1. Sayvari says:

This is the same story in most of the surveys, India/n is missing instead South Asian is provided whereas Pakistan and Bangladesh appear as separate categories.
I make it a point to select Others and mention Hindu/Indian.
