Angus Reid Poll: 50% think Kanishka bombing has not been treated as “Canadian tragedy”

26th June 2025 – A recent poll published on the 40th anniversary of Air India Flight 182 bombing by prestigious research institute, Angus Reid, has revealed some shocking facts about how this terror act that was planned on Canadian soil is remembered in Canada.

Half of the respondents have confirmed that Canada has never truly treated this incident as a national tragedy. While almost one-third are unsure, 17% disagree to this.

A critical part of the report also covers information about the ‘disinformation about the bombing’. Almost 40% of the respondents, who know a little about the tragedy believed that “there is too much disinformation” about the incident. The report further reported that the conspiracy theory which blames the Indian government for bombing the plane has been given credibility by Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal who sponsored a petition for another inquiry into the bombing to investigate foreign interference in the incident.

As per the report, over 70% respondents support an exhibit about the bombing at the Canadian Museum of History. Three-fourths of the respondents wish that information about this tragedy be added in curriculum of Canadian schools.

Most respondents believed that it is “inappropriate” for Khalistan supporters to attend memorial events. The report read, “However recent memorial events have been a source of controversy due to the attendance of Sikhs for Justice, a group who support the establishment of a Sikh homeland in India called Khalistan and believe one of the men who is believed to be the key architect of the attack, and also linked to the Khalistan movement, to be “innocent”. One woman, who lost family friends in the Air India bombing, said the rallies by Sikhs for Justice alongside the memorial ceremonies were “repugnant”.”
