‘Recognize Hinduphobia’: Indian envoy to the UN
25th January 2022 – India has now made it official and is demanding recognition of anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist and anti-Sikh phobias at the United Nations.
Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti, who is the Permanent Representative of India at the United Nations, spoke on 18th January 2022 at the International Counter Terrorism Conference by Global Counter Terrorism Council. In his statement, he talked about how 9/11 changed the perspective about terrorism globally. He noted that the threat of terrorism is grave and universal. In order to fight this global menace, we must do away with the idea of ‘good terrorists’ and ‘bad terrorists’. Those who cover up for these terrorists are as much culpable as the doers. They facilitate radicalization and instill fear and mistrust among different communities.
Amb. Tirumurti continued in his statement that while the UN has recognized Islamphobia, Christianophobia and anti-Semitism (the three Abrahamic religions) over the years, the time has come to recognize Hinduphobia, phobias against Buddhism and Sikhism and other religions. He mentioned that only when these phobias are also recognized, it can bring balance into discussion on these topics.
The persecution of religious minorities in Afghanistan and Pakistan has not yet fully caught the attention of global media and academia. Misuse of information and communication technology such as the internet and social media platforms is done to propagate hatred against Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists.
