4th August 2025 – India just like several other nations in the world is now facing heavy trade tariffs from the United States of America. Effective August 1, 2025 the American President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports to the U.S.
In response to to this, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has now issued an official statement.
India has called this targeting as unjustified and unreasonable and confirmed that it will take necessary steps to safeguard its national interests and economic security. Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, India has been accused by the US and its allies in Europe of importing oil from Russia.
Last week, President Trump had again blamed India for its continued relationship with Russia and called both Russian and Indian economies as dead economies.
In its latest statement, MEA said that “India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict. The United States at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability.”
The statement on one hand stated that “Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel and machinery and transport equipment”, it also read on the other hand that “it (US) continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals.”
